Acacia Mangium or more familiarly known as the Acacia Tree thrives in the tropical forests of West Kalimantan which also grows a lot in mainland Papua New Guinea, Papua and Maluku, which in its original area is a weed tree.
Acacia plants in the form of trees with a height of 15 to 20 meters except in less favorable places will grow smaller between 7 to 10 meters. Acacia stems stand tall, hard wood, longitudinal grooved, round in shape and color varies from dark brown, light brown to dirty white. Some plants of acacia species are prickly and not prickly.
Acacia plant leaves are compound leaves consisting of many leaflets and are located facing each other. These leaves are pinnate and oval shaped, the leaf edges are evenly distributed, the tips and ends of the leaves are dull, the leaves are pinned and green. Acacia leaf length is about 5 to 20 cm with a width of 1 to 2 cm.
Acacia is a legume, with the sap and leaves usually containing large amounts of tannin. After growing a few weeks the acacia plants no longer produce the actual leaves but the leaf stalks grow wide and turn into pseudo leaves.
Acacia plant flowers are compound androgynous and are shaped like nails and white. Acacia flowers appear on the armpits and cylindrical petals, anthers shaped like kidneys and white crowns.
Acacia pods and green when they are young, then turn brown after old. The seeds are oval and flat and brown.
Based on the monitoring of the Author who made observations deep in the district of Ketapang, West Kalimantan, precisely at the location of IUPHHK - HTI PT. Nusantara Kalimantan Lestari which is located in the Air Bamban Hamlet, Pantai Ketikal Village, Singkup Subdistrict, there are so many acacia trees of the Acacia Mangium type planted by the company in the Industrial Plantation Forest area.
Acacia trees themselves are based on species that have been encountered in the West Kalimantan region can be grouped into 4 types namely Acacia Mangium, Acacia Crasicarpa, Acacia Auricauliformis and Acacia Silvestris.
As an industrial plant, acacia is a plant that can be processed into several products that are often found around us, namely tissue, paper and meubelier and can also be used as fuel for electricity generation (wood pallets).
At PT. Nusantara Kalimantan Lestari itself has been planted with acacia trees in the middle of the year on July 2015 which is estimated to begin harvesting around mid-July 2022.
Before planting in the area or planting block, the company nurseries or nurseries in a special place where the nursery process requires a total of about 12 weeks with 2 checking periods. Age 0-5 weeks seedlings will be spaced or spaced between planting media which serves to reduce the moisture of the seeds so they are not easily attacked by pests and diseases. Age 5-12 weeks the seeds are returned to the spacing and at the same time grading or determine which seeds are ready to harvest and transferred to the planting block.
After that the seeds are transferred to the planting block, they will be monitored continuously at the age of 6 months, 18 months, 30 months to 54 months to check the diameter and height of the tree.
Before planting, the land to be used must be loosened first and then mixed with basic fertilizer so that the level of soil fertility increases so that the seeds can grow with enough nutrients. After the seedlings are planted, the surrounding soil must be solidified to avoid evaporation of ground water.
In the course of monitoring these plants in addition to checking the diameter and height of trees, also carried out monitoring of pests or plant diseases that can cause damage to trees. Pests or diseases that commonly damage acacia trees are root borers, leaf eaters, twigs, stem borer, leaf rust, leaf nodules and stem cancer.
The pests that most often attack acacia and including the greatest damage is Hellopeltis sp or leaf-sucking which shoots young shoots of acacia causing shoot death. Even though severe attacks can cause slow plant growth, usually plants will grow back.
Then there are also aphids or aphids, which are small and soft insects that pierce and suck plant fluids. Their colors can vary depending on the species and plants in their suction.
As an Industrial Plantation Forest, PT. Nusantara Kalimantan Lestari always socializes the dangers of forest and land fires caused by traditional land clearing by surrounding communities. Selected type of Acacia Mangium planted by PT. This Kalimantan Sustainable archipelago is because the tree is also classified as a plant with a fast harvest cycle. In warm soils such as in Indonesia, especially West Kalimantan, this plant can be harvested in five to six years. Much faster than in Europe which reached 25 years.
